Francophonie in the spotlight in San Francisco


As part of the celebration of the Month of the Francophonie, the Alliance Française of San Francisco offers a series of activities throughout the month of March around the French language. To begin with, the co-organizers of this event, namely the Consulate General of Luxembourg in San Francisco, Consulate General of Switzerland in San Francisco, Wallonia Export & Investment Agency, Consulate General of Canada of San Francisco, and Quebec delegation in Los Angeles , are honored to offer free screenings of French-language feature films from Luxembourg, Canada, Switzerland and Quebec throughout the month of March, as well as online discussions of the movies in French. Afterwards, the Alliance Française will offer online meetings, including a culinary rendez-vous with a renowned pastry chef as well as a trivia and the 5th edition of the famous Gabrielle Roy dictation!

March 4 to 9 : MOVIE & discussion "Deux", the secret romance

The Alliance Française de San Francisco will open the ball on Friday, March 4, with the screening of the dramatic comedy "Deux".
This first feature film by Luxembourg director Filippo Meneghetti tells the story of Nina and Madeleine, two neighbors who are deeply in love with each other. Although they are just neighbors in the eyes of everyone, they come and go between their two apartments and share their daily lives, until the day a tragic event jeopardizes their relationship.

Released in February 2020, this Belgian-French-Luxembourg film has already won several awards:
-The Best Film Award at the Plural Cinema Festival 2020
-The Grand Jury Prize at the Festival Premiers Plans d'Anger 2020
-The César for Best First Film 2021

The free screening will take place from Friday, March 4 to Wednesday, March 9, followed by an online discussion on March 10th.

March 21 to 23 : MOVIE & discussion "La langue est donc une histoire d’amour" , when French speaks about love

"Language is love Story" is a documentary film from Canada directed by Andrés Livov. Released in theaters in 2019, it relates the daily life of a class unlike any other, that of Madame Loiseau, a teacher-orchestra, who teaches French to adult immigrants, some of whom are illiterate, through texts that speak of love.

To see and discuss this moving and contemporary documentary, the Alliance Française de San Francisco invites you to join us on Wednesday, March 23 from 4:30 to 5:30 pm for a discussion in French on the movie at hand.

March 25 to 28 : MOVIE  "Le vent tourne" , at the intersection of ideals and passion

Synopsis: A young farmer raises her animals far from the modern world. When a man arrives to install a wind-turbine on the farm, her values and her love for her partner are put to the test.

Released in 2018 , this swiss  film has already won several awards:

March 29 to 31 : MOVIE & discussion "Maria", the daily heroine

Synopsis: Maria, a young woman in her thirties with no job and no real ambition, is struggling to find her place in the world.
When she finds out that her mother has an incurable disease, she starts a race against time and life by getting hired as a substitute teacher in a high school. An unusual and pleasant experience during which, to her great surprise, she flourishes.


This movie released in 2021 and produced by Quebec director Alec Pronovost attracted crowds this summer and wins hands down the bet to make people feel good.

To see and discuss this raw and entertaining quest for identity, meet on Thursday, March 31 from 3 to 4 pm.

The online screening will be followed by a discussion (also online) with Alliance members and consular representatives.

March 16 : COOKING - Enjoy the clafoutis, the French culinary rendez-vous


On Wednesday, March 16, the Alliance Française invites you to meet the famous pastry chef Alain LeNôtre who will share his recipe for clafoutis in honor of the Fête de la Francophonie.

Son of caterer Gaston LeNôtre and grandson of a chef at the Grand Hotel de Paris, Alain LeNôtre created the LeNôtre School in 1971, the first culinary arts school for continuing education in France. After serving as the school's general manager from 1972 to 1982, he created a series of LeNôtre culinary institute franchises in Germany, Japan, Brazil, and the United States.

In 2021, Mr. LeNôtre contributed to the translation and republication in English of Faîtes votre pâtisserie comme Lenôtre (in English, French Pastries and Desserts by Lenôtre) by Flammarion with his sister Sylvie.  He is the father of 5 children and grandfather of 11. He was awarded a Knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit in 2010, a Congressional Certificate of Recognition from the Honorable Pete Olson, Congressman, in 2019 and was named an Honorary Texan by Governor Rick Perry in 2002.

This event will be on Zoom and is free to all Alliance Française members. Non-members may purchase tickets ($10).

March 17, 2022 - The Gabrielle Roy Dictation


As part of the Francophonie week, the 5th edition of the Dictée Gabrielle-Roy will be held on Thursday, March 17 at 4:45 p.m. Winnipeg time in Canada (UTC-6) at the following address:

This event, initiated by the Maison Gabrielle Roy of Winnipeg and the Alliance Française de Manitoba, aims to bring together lovers of the French language and to strengthen the community.
For this purpose, the Maison Gabrielle-Roy and the Alliance Française de Manitobain invite you to attend a live reading at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain.
