Our courses follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which is a guideline that describes the level of fluency achieved by a foreign language learner. The CEFRL includes 6 levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. Note that we have recently changed the name associated with each level.

Before enrolling, we invite you to take a placement test to make sure we find the right class for you.  Don't be afraid! It will take you only a few minutes to complete and it's the best way to find the class that fits your language needs.

Some classes (only on Tuesday and Saturday) are held on-site in San Francisco but at this time most of the courses will still be held online. Look for the sign "AF San Francisco" above the schedule to find on-site classes.

Discount is applied automatically when registering for any regular course AND a conversation course.

For all: "MULTIPLE CLASSES - SAME SESSION" DISCOUNT
Get a 10%  discount on each French course when you register for two or more group courses (other than a conversation course) scheduled during the same session.

For AFSF students: Between the last day of the early bird and until the first day of the session , get a 5% discount as a returning student, not compatible with the early bird discount. AFSF students are people who signed up for group courses or 12 hours of private lessons during the last 12 months.

Beginner - Level 1 (A1-1)- ONSITE

A1 - Beginner

 Inspire 1 - Units 1&2 

You will learn how to:
* Greet
* Spell and count
* Present yourself
* Give and ask personal information
 
Unit 1 : Découvrez (discover)
Grammar : First contact with French grammar, the subjects (I, you...), ask a question and answer a question.
Vocabulary : The greetings, the class objects, the alphabet, the numbers until 100 and the days of the week.

Unit 2 : Entrez en contact (first contact)
Grammar : The three forms of « the », some key verbs (to be, to have, to live, to speak), the possessives (my, your...)
Vocabulary : The nationalities, the countries, the greetings (2), the numbers until 1 million, the months and the seasons.

Beginner - Level 3 (A1-3) - ONSITE

Inspire 1 : Units 5&6 

You will learn how to : 
* Talk about your daily routine
* Go grocery shopping 
* Express quantities 
* Talk about the favorite topic for french people : Food 
* Tell a story

Unit 5 : Parlez de votre quotidien (talk about your daily life)
Grammar : Indicators of time, the reflexive verbs, using adjectives, the partitives (du, de la, des), the close future (I’m going to + action).
Vocabulary : The daily activities, the moments of the day, the meals, the shops, the food items, the price, the clothes (2), the colors.

Unit 6 : Partagez vos expériences (share experiences)
Grammar : Expressing a fixed quantity, the passé compose, the chronology, the “on” pronoun.
Vocabulary : The ingredients and the food, the quantity, the restaurant, the wedding, the cinema and the time.

You will learn how to : 
* Give a piece of advice
* Talk about your health

* Talk about the weather 

Unit 7 : Donnez votre avis (give your opinion)
Grammar : The imperative, the verbs pouvoir / devoir / vouloir, expressing a goal and the cause, the indicator of time, the past participles of verbs in -ir. Vocabulary : The body parts and the health, the jobs related to health, the garden, the environment, the travels, the leisures and games.

Unit 8 : Informez-vous (gather information)
Grammar : The recent past, the pronoun “y”, comparing things, using “very” / “too much”, the verbs savoir, édutier, connaître, répondre...
Vocabulary : The studies, work, services, tasks, housing, the weather.

Each week, you will have a document (a text, a video...) to read/watch at home to get you prepared to the conversation. The class is designed for everyone who wants to learn to communicate in everyday situations with commonly-used expressions. It aims to help students acquire knowledge about the French language vocabulary functioning.

Let's practice your spoken skills ! Now that you have completed the A1 level, you can focus on your conversation. In this Elementary Conversation class, we will talk about Francophonie, French culture, news, hobbies, and art based on articles and videos. This class will provide you with various opportunities for expression from general classroom setting through small-group discussions and oral reports. You will learn how to give your opinion and to speak naturally and freely, thus become more confident and comfortable in any conversation in French !

required level of language proficiency – C1–C2 Hybrid class you can either register to join the class online OR onsite The course aims to familiarize students with the main periods of the French language development from the prehistory to the present, to form their critical vision about historical factors influencing the national language formation, to help students acquire advanced knowledge about phonetic, grammatical and lexical systems evolution to develop their writing and oral skills. This 8-week course will cover: Week 1: Introduction to the History of French. Internal and External history. Week 2: Prehistory of the French language. Substrate and Superstrate. Week 3: Particular features of Popular Latin in Gaul. Week 4: Old French: historical overview. Phonetic system changes. Week 5: Old French: grammar system evolution. Week 6: Old French: lexical system development. Week 7: Middle French: historical overview. Particular features of language evolution. Week 8: Classic and Modern French: contribution of the French Academy, poets and writers to the French language evolution. Each theoretical topic will be accompanied by practical tasks, reading and analysis of authentic texts from different periods of the French language evolution.
