The "apéro": more than just Happy Hour

In San Francisco, we have perfected the art of the Happy Hour, enjoying local brews and skyline views on our favorite rooftops. In France, there is a similar, yet distinct tradition called “l’apéro” (short for apéritif). While both share the same goal of unwinding after a long day, the French apéro is seen as a cozy social bridge between the workday and dinner – a dedicated moment where time seems to stand still.

Whether you are on the terrace of a sunny Provençal café or tucked away in a cozy Parisian apartment, it’s a ritual that can comfortably stretch for hours. You don’t need a special occasion to host one; a simple "Tu viens pour l'apéro ?" is the quintessential French invitation to friendship and relaxed conversation.

What’s on the table?

The apéro usually centers around light, savory bites designed to whet the appetite. You’ll generally find bowls of olives, cherry tomatoes, and the classic saucisson (cured sausage). Depending on the region, the drink of choice varies: in the South, a chilled Pastis reigns supreme, while in the North, you might prefer a crisp dry white wine or a Kir (white wine with a splash of blackcurrant liqueur).

The golden rule: the toast !

There is one lovely rule not to be overlooked: eye contact. When you say "Santé !" and clink glasses, you must look your companion directly in the eyes. Legend has it that failing to do so brings seven years of bad luck! It’s a beautiful way to truly acknowledge everyone at the table before taking that first sip.

Bringing France to the Bay Area

Next time you host a gathering in San Francisco, why not add a French touch? Head to your favorite local bakery for a fresh baguette, grab some salted butter, and invite your neighbors over. It’s a wonderful way to blend our vibrant SF energy with a little bit of French "art de vivre."

Cheers, and see you soon for the next apéro!
