Exile to Hollywood : violin & piano concert at Alliance Française SF

At the dawn of the twentieth century, the antisemitism of totalitarian regimes compelled many Jewish composers from Central and Eastern Europe into exile. Fleeing pogroms and persecution, they settled in the United States—the new Promised Land—and found their way to Hollywood. Musicians such as Max Steiner, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Franz Waxman, Miklós Rózsa, Bronisław Kaper, Irving Berlin, and Dimitri Tiomkin established their distinctive musical voice there. Trained in the European classical tradition, they fused it with American culture and the idioms of jazz. Bridging the legacy of the “world of yesterday” and the spirit of modernity, they helped shape the art of film scoring and left an enduring imprint on Hollywood’s Golden Age (1930s–1960s).

Au début du 20e siècle, l’antisémitisme des régimes totalitaires pousse de nombreux
compositeurs juifs d’Europe centrale et orientale à l’exil. Fuyant pogroms et persécutions,
ils s’installent aux États-Unis - nouvelle terre promise - et rejoignent Hollywood. Des
musiciens comme Max Steiner, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Franz Waxman, Miklós Rózsa,
Bronisław Kaper, Irving Berlin ou Dimitri Tiomkin y imposent leur style. Formés à la
musique savante européenne, ils la mêlent à la culture américaine et au jazz. Entre
héritage du « monde d’hier » et modernité, ils façonnent la musique de film et marquent
durablement l’âge d’or du cinéma hollywoodien, le Golden Age (années 1930-1960).
