The Alliance Française of San Francisco is delighted to invite you to a Café Littéraire led by Santino Calcagno,
Associate Professor of French Literature at the Lycée Français de San Francisco.
🖋 Topic of the talk:
Writing Shame in Michel Leiris' Work
In this session, Santino Calcagno will delve into L’Âge d’homme by Michel Leiris, a major figure of 20th-century autobiographical writing. This bold and uncompromising text blends autobiography, introspection, and literary experiment to question the very possibility of telling one’s own truth.
How can shame be written? How does it become a driving force in autobiographical literature? Through a thoughtful approach combining literature, psychoanalysis, and theater, Calcagno will examine the paradox of a self-narrative built on the raw exposure of one’s inner self—somewhere between brutal honesty and staged performance.
A compelling and intellectually rich discussion at the intersection of intimate writing and representation, presented by a passionate educator of contemporary literature and the performing arts.
