A lifelong Francophile, Arya nurtured his reverence for French literature at Middlebury College, where he earned a doctorate in modern languages. He wrote his dissertation on characterization through body language in Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. Now in his tenth year of teaching at the Alliance Française, Arya’s always happy to suggest a book for you to read!
What our students say:
"Arya is a knowledgeable teacher with lots of examples from the literature, He is great!." - K.S.
"Arya makes it a point to include all students in discussions. He encourages us to read out loud, write, and speak to expand our capacity to communicate and understand French. One technique he employs is to give us complementary activities that deepen our understanding of the book we are reading: videos, secondary readings, vocal performances, etc." - Renee
"Very intelligent, knowledgeable with high level of insights." - E.L.
"I strongly recommend Arya to all student who wish to increase their understanding of French literature and its philosophical, sociological, historical and political context through active engagement with the French language." - Karl
"Arya did a great job. He is enthusiastic and very personable. He makes sure everyone participates. His knowledge of American and British literature was very helpful in drawing comparisons to our assigned literary French language book.. He speaks French clearly and slowly enough for us to understand and provides written back up in the Zoom "chat." Also his English is totally fluent and colloquial which makes any word translations seamless."
"Arya does a great job. Arya is a great teacher. He is very well prepared for class. His knowledge of French literature as well as American/English works adds depth to each class. His English and French are totally unaccented and fluent, a good model for all of us. He speaks slowly and clearly. We look forward to an eventual return to in person classes." - Katherine
