Our courses follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which is a guideline that describes the level of fluency achieved by a foreign language learner.

**  90% of the AFSF students who answered our latest survey are satisfied with our group courses and plan to enroll in a course next session. **



Which class best suits my needs?

If you have absolutely no background in French, check out our complete Beginners courses.

Enroll in a Beginner Class

If you do have some background knowledge of French, before enrolling, we invite you to take a placement test to make sure we find the right class for you. 
You can also take a placement test on-site if you prefer. 
Don't be afraid! It will take you only a few minutes to complete and it's the best way to find the class that fits your language needs.

Reminder:
As a student of the AFSF, you can have access to the French online library Culturethèque.
Once you have created your account on Culturethèque, your access is limited to 48h.  Please contact the AFSF at afsf@afsf.com to extend your free access to a year.


How to enroll in a group class? 

  1. Take the placement test if you have some background in French
  2. Register for your class and buy the book online (if required), onsite or by calling us (415) 775-7755 . You will receive your receipt by email.  - During shelter in place you may still buy the book online and choose the electronic version. or pay for the shipping and they will be delivered at your place. 
  3. Check in at the front desk before the first class to pick up your book. - During shelter in place, you can still choose a paper version of the book and pay for the shipping to get it delivered at your place. 
  4. Enjoy learning French! 

Bonus! Students enrolled in classes for one session or more receive a complimentary basic annual individual membership through the Alliance Française de San Francisco

Nous travaillons chaque semaine sur des exercices de grammaire (subjonctif, pronoms relatifs, plus-que-parfait, etc.) en cours de groupe et en devoirs, à partir de la Grammaire progressive du français - niveau perfectionnement (édition 2017)  de CLE International.

Conversation & Vocabulaire - Avancé (B1 - B2)

Are you ready to improve or maintain your French language skills? Bienvenue à tous! In this class, we will challenge your skills through text analysis on current events, history, culture and other topics to get the debate started. Let's get creative with your French skills so you can hold your own at the lively café! We will use the required textbook as a guide to continue your progress between classes.

Note: The course will focus on conversation and vocabulary on various topics. Grammar points will be taught or reviewed during the session, as needed.

Apprendre le Français avec l’actualité et les articles culturels de magazines.

Cette classe est destinée aux apprenants désireux de découvrir, d’approfondir et de perfectionner leurs connaissances de la langue à travers des articles journalistiques puisés dans l’actualité du moment, de séries françaises à l’aide d’extraits et de dialogues.

Joie de Vivre

Nous allons lire des extraits d’une œuvre littéraire francophone (roman, pièce de théâtre, poésie, bande dessinée...) et la situer  dans son contexte culturel: chansons, musique, modes, évènements historiques. Nous allons aussi nous intéresser aux adaptations de l’œuvre au cinéma ou autre média.

Cette classe est à la fois l’occasion de discuter, d’écrire, de lire, de chanter et de jouer une scène. Chaque semaine, vous devrez écrire un texte- souvenir, fiction, réflexion, exercice de style - en rapport avec l’œuvre que nous lisons et  que nous corrigerons ensemble en classe. 

Pour améliorer l’expression, nous consacrerons 30 minutes par classe à un point de grammaire, si possible en lien avec ce que nous lisons.

Les dernières supports littéraires utilisés: Les âmes grises de Philippe Claudel, Art, de Yasmina Reza, Le Passe-muraille de Marcel Aymé, Le Horla, suivi de Lettre d'un fou de Guy de Maupassant, Les Fleurs Bleues de Raymond Queneau, L’étranger d'Albert Camus, Les mots de Jean-Paul Sartre.

Littérature

Au cours de cette année 2020, nous lirons majoritairement des écrivains français contemporains du 21ème siècle. Cette session )janvier-février) sera consacrée au roman de Marguerite Yourcenar: "Nouvelles Orientales"

Chaque cours commence par 30 minutes de conversation spontanée—sur un film, une exposition, une actualité politique ou autre. Ensuite, chaque étudiant/e lit à voix haute un passage qu’il/elle a choisi de partager en classe, ce qui nous permet de travailler un peu la prononciation et le vocabulaire. Puis, nous discutons ensemble les chapitres que nous venons de lire pour telle et telle semaine. S’il reste du temps, les erreurs commises par les étudiants et notées par le professeur font l’objet d’une révision grammaticale et lexicale au tableau.

Le cours de littérature s’adresse à des étudiants dont le niveau de compréhension écrite est avancé et les compétences orales sont d’un niveau intermédiaire fort minimum

During the shelter in place, we  offer online group  classes

Would you like to learn French but can't come in-person to Alliance Française de San Francisco? Find it more enjoyable to learn in a more collaborative group context?

All our group classes have been transferred online for this session.  





If so, our Online Group Classes are the perfect option for you! You can collaborate with your teacher and engage with classmates in real-time like never before from your location through our "Live Classroom Technology". All you need to virtually sit in your live class is a computer with an Internet connection!


Alliance Française de San Francisco
 offers the following online group classes for language learners anywhere in the USA or Canada.

By taking an online class, Live Collaboration with your teacher and your classmates will offer a similar experience as a group class in a classroom.


Live Collaboration
with your teacher will happen in an environment with live video and audio interaction, instant messaging and access to educational tools such as a Shared Notepad and learning materials. These tools are crucial in creating a quality educational environment for our students.

WHAT TO DO TO STUDY ON APOLEARN E-PLATFORM.

Apolearn is a platform where you will be able to  discuss with your teacher and your classmates and where you teacher can share videos, material, homework assignment and documents.
We also have a group for all our students to share news, language learning tips and ressources. 


If you are in a beginner, Intermediate or advanced level and using the textbook Saison 1, 2 or 3 in the class. 

We have been working hard to add all the exercises from you saison exercise book on the platform, as well as some additional material to help you. Most of the exercises will be auto corrective. 

Your teacher and our team will follow your progress on this platform to support your learning in a more customized way!
