Our courses follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which is a guideline that describes the level of fluency achieved by a foreign language learner.

All our classes will be held online until June 19, 2021.

Some background knowledge of French?

Before enrolling, we invite you to take a placement test to make sure we find the right class for you.   Don't be afraid! It will take you only a few minutes to complete and it's the best way to find the class that fits your language needs.

How to register? 

  1. Take the placement test if you have some background in French

  2. Select the course(s) or workshop(s) of your choice and add it to your cart, by going to the "Registration" section below.

  3. Don't forget the books if needed. During the shelter-in-place order, books can be purchased online and delivered to your place (+ shipping fees).

  4. Register for your class online.

  5. You will receive your receipt by email. 

  6. Enjoy learning French! 

Bonus!

Students enrolled in classes for one session or more receive a complimentary basic annual individual membership through the Alliance Française de San Francisco. As a student of the AFSF, you will receive discounts for some activities and you can have access to the French online library Culturethèque.
Once you have created your account on Culturethèque, your access is limited to 48h.  Please contact the AFSF at afsf@afsf.com to extend your free access to a year if it not yet done.

In this class, we will challenge your skills through text analysis on current events, history, culture and other topics to get the debate started. Let's get creative with your French skills so you can hold your own at the lively café! We will use the required textbook as a guide to continue your progress between classes.

Note: The course will focus on conversation and vocabulary on various topics. Grammar points will be taught or reviewed during the session, as needed.

French pronunciation - Advanced

Conversation courses
Ce cours est destiné aux élèves de niveau avancé qui n'ont pas de problèmes phonétiques en particulier mais qui souhaite améliorer leur prononciation générale. Chaque semaine, de manière créative, nous verrons ensemble des phénomènes linguistiques et phonétiques, à travers des textes littéraires, des articles, des exercices de dictées ou de lecture afin de fluidifier la prononciation et agrandir son répertoire vocalique. Les activités de renforcement à la maison seront optionnelles.

Grammaire - Conversation - Vocabulaire - Avancé (B2)

Advanced

Ce cours est un bon mélange de conversation et de révisions de points de grammaire pour perfectionner la structure et le vocabulaire ainsi que pour prendre confiance en soi!

Vous commencerez par un "Quoi de neuf?" rapide par personne, pour connecter entre les étudiants, partager des nouvelles, échanger sur ce qui vous a marqué pendant la semaine (pas de discussion sur les polémiques sur la politique américaine, ni de discussions sur la Covid).

Vous continuerez le cours avec un point de grammaire (nouveau ou à réviser) et des exercices. Il y aura un peu de devoirs chaque semaine. 

Enfin, vous présenterez un sujet en français sur ce que vous avez lu, vu ou écouté en français aussi (sujet au choix, comme par exemple l'art, l'écologie, la culture, etc.).

Grammaire - avancé (B2-C1)

De manière générale, le cours de grammaire est structuré de la façon suivante :

  • Échange oral de 30-40 minutes utilisant les points grammaticaux révisés et/ou à réviser.
  • Correction collective des devoirs, pendant laquelle les étudiants sont libres de poser des questions, et le professeur y répond, en donnant explications et exemples.
  • Quand nécessaire, pratique supplémentaire avec exercices en classe, la plupart du temps basés sur le livre de Grammaire Progressive du Français, mais parfois sur d’autres supports complémentaires sélectionnés par le professeur, comme des exercices interactifs de TV5Monde, Bonjour de France, etc.
  • Lorsqu’un point grammatical a été assimilé, la dernière partie du cours se concentre alors sur un nouvel aspect grammatical.

Le cours "Maitrise B2" est un parcours ludique qui vous permet d'approfondir vos connaissances et de mettre en pratique de nouvelles compétences. Grâce à diverses activités interactives, votre apprentissage se fera naturellement, et surtout, avec le sourire !

Supérieur / Proficient (Communication et Culture) (C1)

Partez à la découverte des cultures françaises et francophones dans un cours interactif !

Le cours "Supérieur / Proficient" vous propose de perfectionner vos compétences linguistiques à partir de documents et thématiques variés (actualités, cinéma, musique, politique, littérature...).

Le cours est axé sur la pratique orale à travers des réflexions, des discussions, des débats : tout pour maîtriser l'art de la conversation en français !  La grammaire est intégrée dans le cours au besoin.

Dans ce cours, développez votre capacité à communiquer sur une vaste gamme de sujets, incluant votre capacité à traiter des sujets inconnus.

A screen shouldn’t keep us from chatting together! Every week, we encourage you to talk on different subjects to practice your spoken skills.

From Beginner level 3 to 5, come and join us to give a try in conversing in French !

Each week, you will have a document (a text, a video...) to read/watch at home to get you prepared to the conversation.
Eight classes, four general topics, to allow you to discover and reuse specific vocabulary while practicing your speaking skills !

Now that you have reached the A2 level, you can focus on your conversation. In this Intermediate Conversation class, we will talk about Francophonie, French culture, news, hobbies, and art based on articles and videos. This class will provide you with various opportunities for expression from general classroom setting through small-group discussions and oral reports. You will learn how to give your opinion and to speak naturally and freely, thus become more confident and comfortable in any conversation in French !

Intermediate Conversation / Grammar (based on texts)(A2-1 to A2-4)

Whether you are 25 or 65 years old, a new member or a long-time San Franciscan, join this class to expand your French skills and understanding!

During each class, you will start with "Quoi de neuf?", a great time to connect with other students and talk in French.

You will then read short texts from a variety of important French literary authors and well-known writers from the francophone world. You will be introduced to the rich literary tradition of France such as Guy de Maupassant, Alphonse Daudet, Emile Zola, André Theuriet and more.

Studying a variety of texts will give you an opportunity to improve your grammar and learn new vocabulary and language structures. By the time you reach the end of this session you will be pleased to find that your reading skills have greatly improved.

This class will provide you opportunity for expression through general classroom and small-group discussions and oral reports.
