ABOUT THIS 6^TH EDITION OF OCEAN HACKATHON®

The Ocean Hackathon is organized by the Campus Mondial de la Mer. Their mission is to bring next-gen leaders, entrepreneurs, advocates, mentors, and partners together to create solutions for the largest challenges facing our ocean. This hackathon  aims to bring out innovative maritime products and services.

Over one weekend (November 5-7, 2021), teams in 16 cities will take up challenges on how to protect the oceans and promote a sustainable maritime economy. 

For this 6^th edition, 171 challenges were received and 132 selected. Their objectives? To better understand and promote the oceans and to rethink the uses for a sustainable maritime economy. If some subjects are universal (pollution, preservation of biodiversity, awareness, etc.), others are more closely linked to the specificities of a territory. Among the 132 challenges, the most present themes are (in decreasing order):

1. Marine sciences
2. Pollution (plastic, invasive species, chemical)
3. Fisheries and aquaculture
4. Conservation
5. Harbours and coastal environment
6. Navigation, Sailing and Diving
7. Ecotourism
8. Awareness to maritime education

People from various backgrounds are encouraged to take part in the 122 challenges available across the world. To tackle these challenges during the 48 hours of the Ocean Hackathon®, the challenge owners are looking particularly for team members in:

• Communication
• Data analysis, Geomatic, IT, Machine learning, UX, Web design
• Ecology, Marine Biology, Oceanography
• Economy, Geography

One winner from each city will be selected to participate in the Grand Finale, which will take place in December 2021 in Brest (Brittany) France.

ABOUT THE SAN FRANCISCO'S LOCAL EDITION

San Francisco’s local edition will receive 8 challenges created by experts from NASA, Stanford, Google, the Ocean Cleanup, 5 Gyres, and UC Berkeley. Here is the DETAILED LIST OF CHALLENGES FOR THE CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO.

Hosting the 1^st edition of the Ocean Hackathon® in San Francisco is a great opportunity to work jointly with local and international communities interested in data and the ocean and innovation for a more sustainable ocean! People interested in learning more about the threats our oceans are facing, challenging their ideas, and connecting with a community of experts are invited to join the +1000 participants from 16 different cities worldwide. They will have the chance to represent San Francisco during the grand finale in France!

The Office for Science and Technology  at the Embassy of France in the United States is a network of 22 team members at the Embassy in Washington, D.C. and in 6 other consulates in the US including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) is a global nonprofit organization based in California. SOA develops leaders, cultivates ideas, and accelerates solutions to the ocean’s greatest challenges. Their programs are aligned with the targets of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 to conserve the ocean and sustainably use marine resources.
